  Pollution  is the introduction of  harmful  materials into the  environment . These harmful materials are called  pollutants . Pollutants can be natural, such as  volcanic ash . They can also be created by human activity, such as trash or  runoff  produced by factories. Pollutants damage the quality of air, water, and land. VOC emissions from the oil and gas industry include  air toxics such as benzene, ethylbenzene, and n-hexane , also come from this industry. Air toxics are pollutants known, or suspected of causing cancer and other serious health effects. Total U.S. Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Economic Sector Industry – Greenhouse gas emissions from industry  primarily com e from burning fossil fuels for energy, as well as greenhouse gas emissions from certain chemical reactions necessary to produce goods from raw materials . Industrial emissions are the third largest source of direct emissions.
